Drivers in Los Angeles may soon be able to pay for additional parking meter fees using their smartphones via text.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has partnered with app developers such as Park Smarter and ParkMobile to pilot the "Text-to-Pay Meters" program in the Larchmont area near Koreatown and Little Tokyo in Downtown LA.

Using these apps, drivers can pay for additional parking fees via text without having to return to the parking meter before their time expires. LADOT plans to expand this pilot program citywide, including Koreatown, after the initial test phase.
