The suspect in the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson (50), CEO of UnitedHealth Group's insurance division, was arrested on the 9th. The New York Police Department (NYPD) held an emergency press conference that afternoon, announcing the apprehension of Luigi Manzoni (26, pictured, Reuters) at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, earlier that morning.

Manzoni is accused of fatally shooting CEO Thompson with a silenced handgun in front of the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan in the early hours of December 4. Using forged identification, Manzoni had evaded police for days. His escape ended at 9:15 a.m. when a McDonald's employee recognized his face and reported him. According to The New York Times (NYT), Manzoni was carrying the silenced handgun believed to have been used in the crime at the time of his arrest.

Reports indicate that Manzoni was in possession of a manifesto criticizing health insurance companies for their profit-driven practices. According to the NYT, Manzoni graduated as valedictorian from a private high school in Baltimore and earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania.

The police retrieved shell casings from the crime scene engraved with words such as "deny" and "defend," strategies allegedly used by insurance companies to deny claims. Based on this evidence, authorities are focusing on the possibility that the shooting was linked to disputes over insurance payouts.
