As we navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing job market, youth play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and creating opportunities for themselves and their communities.

Recently, I had the privilege of connecting with youth delegates from various countries who shared their experiences in advocating for decent work and economic growth. Their stories illustrate the innovative ways young people are addressing unemployment and fostering economic resilience.

One delegate from Ghana spoke passionately about his initiative aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs. He founded a program that provides training and mentorship to aspiring business owners, focusing on skills development and financial literacy. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs has created jobs and stimulated economic growth in his community. By fostering a culture of entrepreneurship, he hopes to inspire youth to take charge of their futures.

In Brazil, a young woman shared her experiences working with a cooperative that focuses on sustainable agriculture. This initiative not only provides fair wages to local farmers but also promotes environmentally friendly practices. She emphasized how this model empowers workers and ensures that economic growth does not come at the expense of the environment. Her dedication to balancing economic and environmental goals serves as a powerful example of how youth can pave the way for a more sustainable future.

These stories resonate deeply with young people everywhere, including in the United States. Many American teens face challenges related to job security and the changing nature of work due to automation and economic shifts. The experiences shared by these youth delegates remind us that we have the power to create change, whether through entrepreneurial ventures, advocacy for fair labor practices, or community engagement.

As we reflect on these examples, it becomes clear that youth are not just passive recipients of economic opportunities; they are active participants in shaping their futures. The time for action is now. Here are a few ways young people in the U.S. can contribute to SDG 8:
