The federal IRS tax filing deadline for 2023 income is today, October 15.
The IRS stated on October 14, “We hope taxpayers will meet the October 15 deadline to avoid penalties for non-filing.” For taxpayers who extended the deadline from April 15 to October 15, penalties for non-filing may be imposed at 5% of the unpaid tax amount per month, with a maximum penalty of 25%.
October 15 is also the deadline for the Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts Report (FBAR). While the original deadline was April 15, if a tax return has not been filed, the deadline is automatically extended by six months.
There are various options for tax filing. First, the IRS offers the electronic filing system ‘IRS Free File Service.’
Notably, taxpayers in disaster areas and military families have an extended tax filing period. Taxpayers with addresses in areas declared disaster zones by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), or those returning from combat zones, are granted additional time to file. States such as Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, New Mexico, Texas, and West Virginia have had their deadlines extended to November 1.
Residents of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, impacted by Hurricane Helen, have until May 1 of next year to file their taxes.
